Press conference 2023

The Jazzfestival Saalfelden invited to press conferences in Salzburg and Munich, where the program of the 43rd festival edition could be presented.

This years festival will take place from August 17-20, 2023. Approx. 60 concerts in the town, in the forest and meadows, musical walks amidst the beautiful mountain scenery and many other highlights await you.

The opening project on the main stage this year was awarded to the Austrian musician Lukas König. He has already been an artist in residence in 2019 and has participated in numerous other projects in Saalfelden in recent years. The Ralph Mothwurf Orchestra will also offer an exceptional contribution to the program: The 18-piece ensemble not only offers a cross-section of the Austrian jazz scene, but is also an opulent orchestral project far removed from all clichés. The Mainstage will also feature two piano trios that couldn't be more contrasting: Argentine pianist Leo Genovese makes a guest appearance at this year's festival, as does Australian trio Brekky Boy. Other highlights include the Swedish musician Anna Högberg with her band “Attack”, the Lux Quartet of Myra Melford and Allison Miller from the USA, the American-Polish NEW QUINTET of Dave Douglas, Ruth Goller & Training from Germany or the American trumpeter Rob Mazurek with "Fathers Wing" and many more. In total, 176 artists:in residence from 14 countries and 5 continents will come to perform.

As part of the Artist in Residence program, Mario Steidl, the artistic director of the Jazzfestival Saalfelden, invites one artist each year to bring several projects to different stages during the festival and thus present themselves to a larger audience. This year, Japanese koto player Michiyo Yagi and Swiss vocalist Andreas Schaerer have been selected to perform. They will each perform three projects. https://www.jazzsaalfelden.com/de/Festival/artist-in-residence

Among the various venues are the Congress Saalfelden, the Kunsthaus Nexus and the Otto-Gruberhalle, an empty industrial hall from the 1950s. The program also includes concerts in the forest, on alpine pastures and also musical walks with Austrian musician Lukas Kranzelbinder. New this year is a free kick-off concert on Thursday in the Otto Gruber Hall by the German band "Malstrom." More than half of all concerts are free again this year!
