Australia
Taylor Davis - piano, synths
Ryan Hurst – bass
Alex Hirlian – drums
The trio from Sydney, named after their surfing pianist/keyboardist's corgi, plays instrumental-electronic jazz intended to evoke the same emotions as an anime by Japan's Studio Ghibli. For example, listen to Setsuko, based on the film The Last of the Fireflies. Or "Novalunosis", inspired by a starry night. Fierce, exciting, surprising, absurd, dramatic and funny, the music of the Montreux Jazz Award nominees is occasionally compared to GoGo Penguin, The Bad Plus or e.s.t.. But the three Australians sound wonderfully unique, not only but already through their offensive use of evil 80s synths.
