In this duo project, koto player Michiyo Yagi, one of our artists in residence, meets American drummer Hamid Drake. If you combine the playful curiosity of the two, who have already appeared with the Johns Zorn and Cage or alongside William Parker, Foday Musa Suso, Pharoah Sanders or Peter Brötzmann, this encounter sounds more than just promising. Multiply that by Drake's "spectacular performances at Jazzfest Berlin" (Jazz thing) and glowing reports from the duet's debut at Wrocław's Jazztopad Festival, both last year, and the parts add up to something even bigger. A brave new Japanese-American friendship.
