Gabbeh

Iran, Austria

Golnar Shahyar - voice, percussion
Mona Matbou Riahi - clarinet
Manu Mayr - bass

The Gabbeh is a variation of the Persian carpet, which is traditionally knotted by nomadic women. The special thing about it is that its abstract, geometric patterns and strong, large-area colors do not follow any particular guidelines. They develop very individually from the moods and feelings of their creators, from the thoughts that go through their minds during weaving.

The Ensemble Gabbeh lives in Vienna and is inspired by the same concept: It picks up threads and brings them together. Its musical textures and designs develop from the open space of improvisation and are rooted in the vital diversity of traditional Iranian folklore. A polyphonic web of the remembered fragments of Persian children's songs, travel stories and life lines and their echoes in the Viennese diaspora. Two worlds, often mirrored, broken and newly joined together.
