Interview W/ Lukas Koenig
"I WANT TO STIMULATE THE MIND AND BODY TO MOVE

At 3, I was given a toy drum set, and at 5, a child's drum set. At 6, my grandfather taught me to play the snare drum. At 10 I went to the music school Prinzersdorf to learn drum set. In the secondary school there was a music teacher who gave me the first Weather Report record. Between 12-14 I went to the first jazz workshops (Scheibbs,Zeillern, Berklee in Umbria). Then at 15 I started to study at the Musikgymnasium in Vienna Neustiftgasse and at the same time at the Gustav Mahler Konservatorium Vienna. After that I studied at the HKB Bern and at the Bruckneruni in Linz.

I try to think as little as possible and rather feel. Of course, sometimes thoughts cross my mind like "Ahh, they're also in the audience, uh oh!" or "This feels great!

This feels great, or it feels weird. Something is not working. Troubleshooting..., or everything is working great and you don't want it to stop.

I want to stimulate either the mind or the body to move with my music. Either one starts to think while listening or to move.

A great ensemble with great musicians from all over the world. Each one a specialist on his/her instrument and improvising.

I wanted to put together an ensemble that has never played together like this before. With 2 basses and a contrabass clarinet, it will be a very low-frequency thing.

I will present with my marimba-gong-drone concept + my amplified cymbal+ drum set everything on my part, which is what keeps me most busy at the moment.

On the distribution and promotion of my just released album "1 Above Minus Underground". Hiphop noise record with quite a few international rappers and musicians.

On 2 composition commissions with the marimba and electronics.

And on a composition for the New Music Ensemble "Studio Dan" with a Pinball Machine, controlled by Victoria Shen.

And I have 2 children. (4 half year old boy, Otis, and a 2 month old daughter, Georgia Luz) that is also a project in itself :-)

I can't do anything else really well except play drums and make music.

As a child I wanted to become a civil engineer like my uncle. But he said that's not such a great idea, I should rather become a drummer :-)
