Jazz Saalfelden Weekender

Culture despite Corona

After months without art and culture in spring and the cancellation of the original festival on April 17th, it was finally born at the end of May: the idea for the Jazz Saalfelden Weekender. From August 20th to 23rd, the musical happening took place with a colorful mix of music from jazz to pop. The concerts took place in the city park, in the Kunsthaus Nexus, on the mountain pastures, in the Ritzen Castle Museum, in the ranch, on the roof terrace of the Congress, in the parish church and in the Fuchs bookbindery. Guests were among others Mario Rom’s Interzone, Lukas Kranzelbinder, Voodoo Jürgens, Fuzzman, Neon and The Deons, Cari Cari, and many more. The artistic director, Mario Steidl on the program: “It was important to me that we make a musical happening for everyone. A festival that spreads confidence, joy and some cultural normalcy. Because culture connects, especially in times like these! ”This year too, Saalfelden became a music city in the middle of the mountains. The tickets were scanned contactlessly on site, and mouth and nose protection had to be worn by all employees and the audience. The 1-meter distance rule was mandatory for the entire “Weekender”. The audience showed a lot of understanding and was grateful that a festival could take place despite the numerous measures and rules. The date for 2021 has already been set: the 41st Saalfelden International Jazz Festival will take place from 19 to 22 August 2021.

For the first time, the church - thanks to our Pastor Alois Moser - became a stage and great jazz greats like Manu Delago and Lorenz Raab enchanted the audience in this special location. An additional highlight were the musical hikes on the Asitz in Leogang, with sunshine and a fantastic view. On Friday and Saturday we hiked with the Austrian musician Lukas Kranzelbinder, who has been an integral part of the line-up for several years.
