39. International Jazzfestival 2018
42 Concerts - 20 of them for free!
Every year, the artistic director Mario Steidl awards the opening project to an Austrian musician - this year, this honor was given to clarinetist Ulrich Drechsler and his seven-member ensemble of the "Liminal Zone". The experimental soul of the four days of the festival were the shortcuts in the Kunsthaus Nexus. They are a decoupling of the main concerts and prove for another year how multifaceted jazz music can be. Great musicians like the drummer Judith Schwarz, guitarist Raoul Björkenheim and violinist Théo Ceccaldi inspired the jazz fans with strange sounds and free improvisation. In addition to 21 fee-based concerts on the MainStage in the Congress and the ShortCuts in the Kunsthaus Nexus, the Jazzfestival Saalfelden once again offered so many concerts this year for the first time with free access to a total of five different venues. In addition to the city days, the Nexus +, the alpine concerts and the children's concert, another series was launched this year. Under the title "City Tracks" two other venues were programmed for the first time: the Museum Schloss Ritzen with the "Paier Valcic Quartet" and the bookstore Wirthmiller with the "Duo Hofmaninger / Schwarz". More than 180 artists from 26 nations provided musical highlights this year. Among them jazz greats such as Nicole Mitchell, Marc Ribot and Elliott Sharp, as well as newcomers such as Schnellertollermeier, Jaimie Branch, Virta and Punkt.vrt.Plastic.
